After the first issues we spent a long time with reader feedback, working out what would make it more distinctive. Plenty of praise came back, and enough constructive criticism to turn it into something genuinely competitive.
Anyone holding a copy is holding a Hungarian print piece made with real care, and that was the standard we set at the start rather than the one we settled for at the end.
The same simplicity and minimalism we are known for. We wanted to leave behind the dated feel of a lot of Hungarian print and give it fresh momentum, with a touch of Scandinavian restraint.
The aim throughout was harmony between form and function: traditional publication-design rules combined with current graphic trends in imagery and colour, without letting either win outright.
Print is unforgiving — nothing can be patched after it ships — so the grid and the type scale were settled before a single spread was laid out.
We stayed on well past the design stage: visuals first, then the cover, then the typesetting, and finally the content shaped into the format.
We followed the print preparation too, from choosing the right printer through to production, because the object has to demonstrate the same quality on the shelf that it does on screen.
It has been published every month since, still with us involved.
